In addition to beauty, aesthetic judgment also concerns the sublime, that is, what is absolutely great beyond any comparison, immeasurable, immeasurable. It is what manifests itself in the forms of an extraordinary power within nature.
It is absolutely great, immeasurable is that in comparison to which everything else is small, that is, the infinite, which cannot in any way be an object of knowledge, as it has no equivalent on the empirical level. It is, so to speak, foreshadowed, glimpsed by the Judgment, in front of certain natural spectacles that surpass all capacity of our imagination, admirable in their grandiose power even when they represent the unleashing of the forces of nature: the high mountains, the opening of the abysses, the stormy ocean, the eruption of a volcano, a destructive storm. The sense of admiring amazement, combined with the dismay that we feel in front of these scenarios are determined by the fact that onto them we project the idea of absolute greatness which is typical of the supersensible and of which we find a trace in us as moral subjects, belonging for this aspect to the intelligible world.
