ANNA KRASNOVA

makeup artist and creative director

How did your career start?

My makeup career started 10 year ago in Moscow, Russia. Back then, I worked with children models and focused on makeup for portfolios and photos for various fashion magazines. It was an incredibly interesting and kind step in my career. Now, it is so nice to see these grown-up models, some of whom have successful careers and worldwide recognition.

Afterwards, I cooperated with several beauty salons, participated in shootings of multiple fashion and beauty brands and practiced bridal makeup. That time digital social media was not well-developed, but still I had famous actresses and opera divas among my clients. The diversity of my clientele always kept me energized.

My husband got a job offer and we moved to Abu Dhabi 4 years ago. There are incredibly picturesque locations, models and women from all over the world - each with unique features and character. Every event here is special, full of bright colors and intensive makeups. I am extremely happy that I was able to continue my makeup career here.

Tell us a little about this shoot

The name of this project is «The Escape From Earth». It is based on a fictional event when humanity faced the possibility of destruction of our planet Earth. The story describes the unavoidable escape from Earth and touches upon the adaptation period on a new planet. Furthermore, it provides a glimpse into the new reality and how humanity learnt to live in and enjoy its new home.

This idea came to me spontaneously but not without a precursor. Climate change, wars, pandemic and forays of the richest businesses men into the space inspire the thoughts of escape to another planet. I am grateful that my idea was supported by all participants of this project. I had know Julia Kamaletdinova for long time and did not have any doubts that she would be a perfect wardrobe stylist for this project. Then, I invited Yulia Kem the fashion photographer from Dubai, I saw her great performance in the magazines and she got interested in the shoot from the very start. And finally, I was able to find an incredibly cosmic model Helena Soares from BareFace Agency for this cosmic project.

Being both a creative director and a makeup artist of the photoshoot, I had a clear idea how the final looks should be and I was utterly anxious to complete the shoot and see the results.

Interestingly enough, one of the looks was shot at Al Wathba Fossil Dune surrounded by the desert and located 30 minutes away from Abu Dhabi. There are formations are made by wind-swept sand that when permeated with calcium carbonate start to harden and form distinct, varied and abstract structures. It is really beautiful and unique place and looks like another planet, The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCE) protects it.
It was 40 degrees Celsius outside with high humidity that day, so we had to move fast in order not to melt. Helena could speak Spanish and French and the rest of participants spoke only English and Russian which brought an unexpected challenge and a few laughs along the way. However, at the end, the shoot was a success and we all had a feeling that we had known each other for ages. I am so grateful to our team who made this project real.

What inspires you?
Sometimes, I can be inspired by a very subtle and natural things like sun shine, play of shades, changing colors. The other times, my inspiration comes from a complex creations art, classical music or movies. Ultimately, seeing some results of my work inspires me the most. You spend hours doing a makeup for a model, a bride or any other client for a particular event and see how confident and happy they are in that moment. Assisting other people to look good is fun and fulfilling. Alternatively, you can work for weeks for a photoshoot project focusing on every little detail and then get beautiful pictures when all those things become one whole story. It means a lot! Especially, the feedback of my closest people and family gives me both satisfaction and inspiration to continue finding out how far I can go.

Tell us about your creative plans

It is a very complex task to plan anything during our turbulent times. Nevertheless, I know exactly what I would like to achieve in my makeup career. I enjoy watching meaningful movies with bright and elegant female protagonists. My favourite film director is Woody Allen, I love his moves, especially how he depicts epoch of the beginning of 20th century in his movies like Midnight in Paris or Café Society. Moreover, I am sure that if I had a chance to participate in a similar movie shoot as a makeup artist for a lead performer, it would mean a lot to me. Furthermore, I am dreaming about doing makeup for actresses for Oscar ceremonies or Cannes Film Festivals. As I have always been infatuated by their unbelievable dresses and looks while they stroll along the red carpet. I doubt that there are any other events that would allow me to demonstrate what I can really do.

On top of that, I think it would be great to create a beauty brand with some innovative anti-aging products. Being a mother of beautiful twin daughters, I would like them to continue this family business.
